Crypto Gains Could Fund the National Debt — If Congress Let Them The US government is currently paying around 5.35% to borrow money, a 24-year high. At the same time, an enormous amount of wealth sits locked in crypto wallets — early Bitcoin holders with gains in the millions who have never sold. A major reason those coins don't move is the tax bill: selling means surrendering 15–20% or more of the gain to capital gains tax. So the wealth sits idle while the government borrows at historic rates from everyone else. The proposal: allow crypto holders to roll their gains into 5- or 10-year US Treasury bonds tax-free, with the funds locked for the full term. For the holder, the trade is simple: convert a volatile asset into guaranteed income of roughly 5.3% a year, principal fully protected, with no tax taken off the top on the way out. For the government, it creates a new class of long-term lenders at the exact moment borrowing costs are at their highest in a generation. Dormant crypto wealth — some of it untouched for over a decade — would be put to work financing the country rather than sitting in cold storage. The concept is not new. Real estate investors have used 1031 exchanges for decades to roll gains from one property into another and defer the tax. This is the same mechanism, except the asset on the other side of the trade is US Treasury debt. The obvious objection is lost tax revenue. But that revenue is largely theoretical — much of it is never collected because the holders never sell. The government would instead gain a decade-long lender and downward pressure on its own borrowing costs. The question is whether dormant crypto holders would use such an exit, or whether any sale at all is unacceptable to the earliest believers. Either way, the math is worth running: trillions in digital assets on one side, a government paying 24-year-high borrowing costs on the other, and currently no bridge between them.
