At its core, cryptocurrency was designed to be digital money that exists on a decentralized networkโmeaning no single company, bank, or government controls it.
The Original Vision
It relies on an open ledger where thousands of independent computers verify transactions. This ensures no one can cheat the system or print fake money.
The Reality Today
The vast majority of the modern crypto market has completely abandoned this. Most popular tokens today are highly centralized, controlled by venture capitalists, or run on networks that can be paused and have no supply limit by their corporate creators.
Why Does It Exist?
Cryptocurrency was created in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis to give people an alternative to the traditional banking system. The goal was to build a financial network where individuals had absolute ownership of their own money, without a centralized middleman dictating who could use it, charging hidden fees, or freezing accounts.
While true cryptocurrencies still fiercely defend this ideal, many of today's trendy coins have ironically become even more centralized than the banks they were "supposed" to replace.
